Before asking \u201cWhy drink natural wine?\u201d, we need to ask, \u201cWhat is thedefinition\u00a0of \u201cnatural wine\u201d<\/strong>?
\nThere is much debate in the press, on the internet, and among producers and wine experts about \u201corganic<\/a>\u201d, \u201cbiodynamic<\/a>\u201d, \u201cnatural<\/a>\u201d wines. To date, these discussions have generally not helped consumers understand better what natural wine is.<\/p>\n

Without entering into those larger debates, we offer a definition of organic wine based on these\u00a0basic criteria<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  • The grapes used in making organic wine must come from vineyards that\u00a0do not use synthetic chemicals<\/strong>\u00a0such as weed-killers and pesticides.<\/li>\n
  • The winemaking processes should\u00a0minimise the use of additives<\/strong>\u00a0like sulfites.<\/li>\n
  • Wine is an expression of the people and place that produce it and should reflect the\u00a0character of its territory.<\/li>\n
  • Wine should be a\u00a0natural accompaniment to food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
